Inyo County was
formed in 1866 and bears the Indian name for it's mountains,
"Dwelling Place of the Great Spirit." No other
area of equal size in the world presents such contrasts
in topography and climate. Inyo County is the second
largest County in California at 10,140 square miles
and has a population of only 18,281.
Inyo County is made up of several valleys
and mountain ranges. The Eastern boundary of the County
is the California/Nevada border and the western border
is in the High Sierra Mountain Range. The valleys in
the county are long and narrow, each with their own
spectacular beauty. The mountain ranges vary from sheer
granite peaks to the more rounded reddish remains of
once active volcanoes
The highest and lowest points, in the
contiguous states, are separated by only 80 miles, Mount
Whitney, just outside of Lone Pine and Badwater in Death
Valley. Lone Pine is also the location of the famous
Alabama Hills. Big Pine is where you will find the southern
most glacier in the United States and the worlds oldest
living trees (the Bristle Cone Pines). Bishop is the
only incorporated city in the entire county and home
to the Mill Pond Music Festival. Independence the county
seat, has many wonderful historic buildings, the turn
of the century Court House, the Mary Austin House an
and many more.
At an almost equal distance, approximately
250 miles, from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Reno, Inyo
County is conveniently located and easy to reach. This
