Inyo County was formed in 1866 and bears the Indian name for it's mountains, "Dwelling Place of the Great Spirit." No other area of equal size in the world presents such contrasts in topography and climate. Inyo County is the second largest County in California at 10,140 square miles and has a population of only 18,281.

Inyo County is made up of several valleys and mountain ranges. The Eastern boundary of the County is the California/Nevada border and the western border is in the High Sierra Mountain Range. The valleys in the county are long and narrow, each with their own spectacular beauty. The mountain ranges vary from sheer granite peaks to the more rounded reddish remains of once active volcanoes

The highest and lowest points, in the contiguous states, are separated by only 80 miles, Mount Whitney, just outside of Lone Pine and Badwater in Death Valley. Lone Pine is also the location of the famous Alabama Hills. Big Pine is where you will find the southern most glacier in the United States and the worlds oldest living trees (the Bristle Cone Pines). Bishop is the only incorporated city in the entire county and home to the Mill Pond Music Festival. Independence the county seat, has many wonderful historic buildings, the turn of the century Court House, the Mary Austin House an and many more.

At an almost equal distance, approximately 250 miles, from Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Reno, Inyo County is conveniently located and easy to reach. This resource guide will soon contain maps with easy directions.
